                  2. To blend short a with the other consonants

                  3. To read rhyming words correctly

Target Words: cat, fat, sat, mat

Target Sentence: A fat cat sat on a mat.

Time: 20 mins

Pupils: 20 K2 pupils

Warm-up:

Greeting and get Ss engaged by "passing around ball" to recite the names of letter A-Z.

Presentation:
1. Introducing letter c, a, t, f, s, m: T names (well-behaved) Ss to pick up letter cards from a bag. Only one card each time. Then practice the name and the sound of each letter. Guide Ss to explore the sound of the letter by giving them different words with the same beginning sound.

T: What is this?

S: (letter c card) "c"

T: It IS "c". It is the name of the letter. But what is the sound of "c"? Anybody knows?

S: (responses vary).

T: The sound actually sounds like the sound you make when you are coughing (refer to "cough" in Mandarin, that is "咳嗽" ké sòu). "咳嗽" ké sòu ! "咳嗽" ké sòu  !  "咳" ké ! "咳" ké ! "咳"  !

S: (most of them think the c letter sound is funny; they start to pretend coughing)

T: Now look at the cards. What is this? (carrot) What is that? (clown) Again, say "carrot" (S:carrot), "clown" (S:clown). Slow motion, say "c-a-r-o-t" (S:c-a-r-o-t), "c-l-ow-n" (S:c-l-ow-n). What is the beginning sound of "c-a-r-o-t" and "c-l-ow-n"?

S: (shall be able to say /k/)

T praises Ss and have letter c card and two word cards placed together on the blackboard. T continually introduces letter a

2. Blend letter c and a together

3. Introduce letter t and blend letter c, a, and t together. Praise Ss that they can spell their first word "c-a-t, cat". TPR: T explain the meaning of the word "cat" by imitating a cat and making"meow" sound. Then show Ss a flashcard with a picture of a cat and the word on.

4. Introduce letter f, blend with letters at to produce another word "fat". TPR: T explains the meaning of the word "fat" by acting having a double chin and big belly and then walk slowly. Then show the flashcard.

5. After introducing the word "cat", "fat", "sat" and "mat", guide Ss to link the words together to make a sentence: A fat cat sat on a mat.

Practice & Production:
1. Find The Babies Home:
T draws 5 houses on the blackboard and has each letter card placed on each house. Explains to Ss that the missing babies (word cards) are finding a way home (letter card). Have word cards shuffled and name volunteers to place each missing baby (word card) underneath each house (letter card)!

2. Hit The Flies:

T draws 5 flies on the blackboard and has each letter card placed on each fly. Explains to Ss that they need to hit the fly (letter card) which T calls (randomly says the sound of each letter).

Wrap-up:

Have Ss tell you what they have learned today. Show the flashcard (only picture) to have Ss say the sentence learned: A fat cat sat on a mat. Points counted and stickers assigned.
